Picking by Age
A four-year-old and a fourteen-year-old need different resorts. The four-year-old needs water she can stand in, a splash area, and a kids club that takes her at three or four. The fourteen-year-old needs a slide tower, a teen lounge with other teenagers in it, and a beach he can actually swim at. The grandparents need a room away from the pool stage. Most families are two or three of those at once, and the resorts that fit all of them make a short list. That is the list I keep.
Tell me the ages and the month and I come back with two or three resorts that fit: which ages each kids club takes, which rooms sleep everyone without a rollaway, and whether the water out front is a swimming beach or a looking beach. Three Kinds of Family Week
Every family all-inclusive trip I plan starts with the same sort. Under six needs calm water and an early kids club. Six to twelve is the water-park age. Teenagers need a real teen lounge and a beach they can swim. Most families are a mix, and the resort has to cover every kid in it.

Sits on the corner at Punta Cancún fronting the protected bay side, so the ocean is actually swimmable for little ones, and the KidZ Club (ages 4 to 12) has its own mini water park with five slides. My go-to family answer on the island.
Miches, Dominican Republic · All ages
Opened September 2025 on the calm Playa Esmeralda cove, with the Explorer's Club for kids, a teen zone and a waterpark, sharing a campus with adults-only Secrets next door. I run its fan community, so I read how family stays go there every week.
Riviera Maya · All ages
All junior suites, fully renovated, with the widest access on the five-resort Paraíso complex: the Aqua Fun water park, the wave pool and lazy river, and the Star Camp kids club. Lindo next door gets the same water park at a lower rate.

The family flagship in the San José hotel zone: the KidZ Zone mini water park with five slides, and pools that carry the day on a look-not-swim beach. The easiest family yes on the cape.

A family-focused Dreams up in quiet Uvero Alto with connecting-room setups that actually work for bigger crews, plus the Explorer's Club and the Core Zone teens club. The quiet-end answer for families who want space over scene.
Playa del Carmen · All ages, parks included
I have stayed, and it is one of the two most unique resort environments in Mexico, maybe anywhere: you walk the grounds, come to a rope-and-wood bridge over a river, and jump in and swim on. The Xcaret parks are in the rate, which no other resort can offer, so it plays like the Disney World of Mexico. AAA Five Diamond since 2019, Forbes Four-Star, and a Michelin star at HA'.
Mayakoba · All ages
The uniqueness is Mayakoba itself: a gated lagoon community north of Playa del Carmen with its own small town in the middle, El Pueblito, where a cooking class is the afternoon plan. Fairmont is the family side of it, AAA Five Diamond since 2007, and the upscale answer when a family wants a luxury resort rather than a big all-inclusive. Not all-inclusive by default, but I book it with the all-inclusive package when the meals should be settled, and room-only when they should not. I have stayed.

Two resorts sharing one big footprint at the quieter north end of town: the family side with its kids club and water fun, and the adults-only La Perla side next door. I have stayed on both. The Family Concierge tier is the reason I send people here: it includes a local experience, currently a cenote visit, a yoga session with a Mayan shaman, and its own pool.

Aqua Fun: slides, a lazy river and a wave pool, plus two swim-up bars in the main pool. Lindo is the sweet spot for most families, with the same water park as Maya at a lower rate. If your nine-year-old was promised a lazy river, Lindo delivers.

Aqua Nick, themed around the characters: the Epic Plunge slide tower, a lazy river, splash pads and playgrounds. The resort for the years when your kids know every Nickelodeon name.

Pirates Island: 45,000 square feet, more than eleven slides, a lazy river and a surf simulator, with Sesame Street shows for the little ones. The new Treasure Beach Village adds multi-bedroom suites on Grace Bay and a 15,000-square-foot pool with shallow coves. The Caribbean's water-park benchmark.
Under six, the slide tower is scenery. What matters is water they can stand in, a splash area, an early kids club, and a room where a nap can happen.
Playa Mujeres · All ages
Two water-play areas, a mini one for the little kids and a bigger one for the older ones, and a kids club that takes potty-trained three-year-olds and lets a parent stay in with the youngest. An adults-only Excellence Club section for the grown-ups' afternoon.
Miches, Dominican Republic · All ages
The resort that put Miches on the map in 2019, with Club Med's famous kids programming from babies through teens: the Baby Club starts at four months. Four boutique villages on a huge green site facing the calm cove.
Cancún · All ages
Fifteen minutes from the airport on Playa Delfines, with RiuLand split into two age groups (4 to 7 and 8 to 12), a kids pool with slides, and Friends & Family and two-bedroom family rooms that solve the family-of-five problem. I run its fan community.
Playa Mujeres · All ages
Every room is a junior suite with a sofa bed, the Explorer's Club takes kids from 3 to 12, and the club has its own outdoor mini water park. On calm Playa Mujeres, about 35 minutes from the airport, next door to adults-only Secrets.
Tulum · All ages
The family classic at Tankah, about fifteen minutes north of Tulum, oceanfront on its own quiet, calm bay: a full resort, a kids club, and the ruins as an easy morning trip. Families who book it knowing it is not in town come home happy.
Teenagers need a place that is theirs, other teenagers in it, and a resort big enough to keep up with them.
Cancún · All ages
The Lounge, for ages 13 to 19: basketball, ping pong, bowling, AR gaming, an indoor pool and a snack bar. Outside it, The Bay, a 2.8-acre saltwater lagoon that is the biggest pool at any Cancún resort, plus a kids water park. Family suites sleep two adults and three kids. I run the AVA fan group.

Thirteen pools including a kids splash pool with slides and a tipping bucket, a Teen Zone for 13 to 17 with pool and ping pong tables and tournaments, and a kids club for 4 to 12, on its own stretch of sand south of the island. I run its fan community too.
Riviera Maya · All ages
Rockaway Bay, with 22 slides sized by height, plus Woodward, an indoor action-sports center with a skate park, trampolines, foam pits and an obstacle course. The teenager's resort, with the adults-only Heaven side for the parents' evenings.
Cap Cana, Punta Cana · All ages
The Canapolis water park with five slides, a lazy river and water cannons, a Teen Club for 13 to 17 with VR and racing simulators, and full crossover to the adults-only Hyatt Zilara restaurants next door. On sheltered Juanillo Beach, ten minutes from the plane.
Cancún · All ages
Water slides, a lazy river and a wave pool, and the thing teenagers talk about afterward: a surf simulator you can book lessons on. Big, busy, and built for older kids who want the resort to keep up with them.
Kids Stay Free
Kids-stay-free windows come and go by brand and by travel date. RIU, Palace Resorts, AVA, Hilton Cancun Mar Caribe, Grand Velas and Royalton have all run them, usually for travel in the softer months, and Punta Cana sees them more often than almost anywhere I book.
The catch is in the fine print: an age cap, a minimum stay, specific travel dates, and sometimes only certain room categories. I read the terms before I quote, I post the offers worth knowing on my promotions page, and if your dates miss a window by a week, I will tell you what moving the trip would save.
Three days before our trip, a major storm was announced for the day of take-off. I called Mike right away. He didn't just save the trip, he got us two extra days. New flights, new resorts, private shuttles between airports and properties. Above and beyond.
Straight Answer
Slides win the first afternoon. The room and the water win the other six.
The biggest water-park resorts are also the biggest resorts: long walks, big buffets, and pool decks that fill by ten. With kids under six, calm water and a kids club that takes them beat any slide tower. With teens, the slide tower matters and so does a lounge with other teenagers in it. If part of your group wants quiet, several family resorts run an adults-only section under the same roof, Iberostar Selection Cancún, Paradisus Playa del Carmen, Marriott Miches, Barceló Bávaro Grand and Finest Playa Mujeres among them, and I will tell you which one fits before you fall for a slide photo.

It depends on the ages. My all-round answers are Hyatt Ziva Cancun for its swimmable bay and KidZ Club, Iberostar Selection Paraíso Maya and Lindo for the Aqua Fun water park and Star Camp, Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos and Hyatt Ziva Cap Cana for their water parks and teen clubs, and Dreams Playa Esmeralda in Miches for a calm cove with a waterpark and a teen zone. For younger kids I look at Finest Playa Mujeres, Dreams Playa Mujeres, RIU Ventura Cancún and Club Med Michès; for teenagers, AVA Resort Cancún, Hilton Cancun Mar Caribe and Hard Rock Riviera Maya.
Most start at three or four. Hyatt's Explorer's Club at Dreams resorts takes 3 to 12, Hyatt Ziva's KidZ Club takes 4 to 12, RiuLand takes 4 to 7 and 8 to 12 in separate groups, and Finest Playa Mujeres takes potty-trained three-year-olds and lets a parent stay in the club with the youngest. Club Med Michès runs a Baby Club from four months. Teen clubs usually cover 13 to 17; AVA's Lounge runs 13 to 19.

In the Caribbean, Pirates Island at Beaches Turks and Caicos is 45,000 square feet with more than eleven slides and a surf simulator.
Yes, at the right resorts. AVA Resort Cancún's family suites sleep two adults and three kids, RIU Ventura Cancún has Friends and Family rooms with three queens plus a sofa bed and two-bedroom family rooms, Nickelodeon Punta Cana's two-bedroom Pineapple suites sleep six, and Beaches Turks and Caicos built its new Treasure Beach Village around multi-bedroom suites. Elsewhere I request connecting rooms with the resort before arrival. I confirm the configuration before you pay a deposit, because a rollaway in a standard room is not a family plan.

Book two bedrooms or connecting rooms; nobody wants to share with a teenager.
Both work, for different reasons. Cancún has the short transfer, a calm north end where little kids can swim, and the water-park resorts of the Riviera Maya within an hour. Punta Cana has reef-protected, swimmable water at Bávaro and Cabeza de Toro, mega-resorts with water parks and kids clubs, and kids-stay-free deals more often. If you fly from the Northeast, both are direct; I usually let the ages and the dates decide.

The school-vacation weeks sell first: Presidents' Week, spring break, and the week between Christmas and New Year's. For those, the earlier the better, because family suites, two-bedroom layouts and connecting rooms are the first categories to go. Off-peak weeks can be booked closer in, and that is often where the kids-stay-free windows sit.
