Luxury All-Inclusive Resorts: Which Five-Star Resorts Are Actually Five-Star

Almost every resort in Mexico and the Caribbean calls itself five-star, and most of them awarded the stars to themselves. I am Mike Boguslavskiy. I have stayed at 115+ resorts, I book the luxury tier every week, and I keep a short list of the luxury all-inclusive resorts that earn the word: inspected ratings, butler service that answers, and dining that would survive outside the gates. Every all-inclusive booking includes private roundtrip airport transfers from me.

I book the luxury tier directly with the brands: Velas Resorts (Grand Velas and Casa Velas), Le Blanc, Hotel Xcaret and La Casa de la Playa, Hyatt's Impression, Zoëtry and Secrets, UNICO, Excellence, Iberostar's JOIA, and the luxury properties that skip the all-inclusive model at Mayakoba, Maroma, Aruba and Costa Rica. As a Hyatt Privé member agency, my bookings at participating Hyatt Inclusive Collection resorts carry Privé extras on top of the rate.

Five Stars, Self-Awarded

Why Almost Every Resort Says Five-Star, and Who Actually Checks

Mexico's hotel star system is a self-evaluation. The hotel fills in the questionnaire, the tourism ministry registers the result, and the stars go on the website. That is why a value resort and a butler resort can both call themselves five-star and both be telling the truth by that standard. The stars tell you what the resort thinks of itself.

Two organizations actually send people. AAA's inspectors visit unannounced, every year, and hand Five Diamond to roughly three in every thousand properties they rate. Forbes Travel Guide's inspectors book anonymously, stay at least two nights, and grade against up to 900 standards, most of them about service. When a resort holds one of those, the stars mean something. When it does not, the stars are its opinion.

Then there is the third check, which is mine. I have stayed at 115+ resorts, most of the luxury tier more than once, and I know which butler programs answer the phone, which "adults-only sanctuary" shares its beach with a party resort, and which suite category is worth the jump. Ratings get a resort onto the short list. Staying there is how I rank it. More on how I plan every trip: about me.

Mike Boguslavskiy at Impression Moxché by Secrets, Playa del Carmen
At Impression Moxché by Secrets, Playa del Carmen, August 2023.
Inspected ratings only
AAA Five Diamond and Forbes Travel Guide stars are the only ratings I quote. Self-awarded stars do not count, and neither do "luxury" in the name.
A butler who answers
Whether the butler program is a real point of contact for the week or a welcome note and a pillow menu.
Suites, not rooms
Square footage, the tub on the terrace, and whether the entry category is already a suite or the suite is an upsell.
Dining that books out
Tasting menus, chef-driven rooms, and reservations that matter. A Michelin star inside an all-inclusive exists; I know where.
The beach, honestly
Swim beach or look beach. Every coast has both, and the rate does not tell you which one you booked.
Transfers, included
Private roundtrip airport transfers on every all-inclusive booking, from me, timed to your flight.

Three Tiers, One Word

Premium, the Club Tier, or Truly Luxury: Where the Line Actually Falls

"Luxury all-inclusive" gets used for three different products, and the price gap between them is real. Knowing which one you are looking at is most of the decision.

Premium

What you get
The big-name resorts: better food, nicer rooms, stronger service than the value tier. Where most couples and families land.
The tell
Standard rooms at the base rate, with the club level sold as an upgrade.
Examples
Hyatt Ziva and Dreams, Iberostar Selection, Riu Palace, Excellence's family brand Finest.
Best for
Great weeks that do not need to be perfect weeks.

The Club Tier

What you get
A resort within the resort: Preferred Club, Excellence Club, Vantage Club. Better suites, a private pool and lounge, upgraded dining access.
The tell
Same resort, same beach, same restaurants. The upgrade is the room and the pool. Preferred Club is an upgrade.
Examples
Secrets Preferred Club, Excellence Club, Hyatt Zilara, JOIA by Iberostar, Le Blanc's junior suites.
Best for
Anniversaries and honeymoons that want polish without the top-tier rate.

Truly Luxury

What you get
Butler service on every suite, inspected ratings on the wall, and dining that would survive outside the gates. Impression is a different resort.
The tell
The entry category is already a suite. There is nothing above it to upgrade to.
Examples
Grand Velas, Le Blanc, Impression by Secrets, Hotel Xcaret Arte and La Casa de la Playa, UNICO.
Best for
The trip that has to be perfect, and the traveler who will notice when it is not.

With Any of Them

  • Private transfers are on me. Roundtrip airport transfers on every all-inclusive booking, timed to your flight.
  • I tell you which tier your budget actually buys. A club-tier suite at a premium resort often beats an entry room at a luxury one for the same money, and sometimes it does not.
  • Privé extras where they apply. At participating Hyatt Inclusive Collection resorts, booking through a Hyatt Privé member agency adds amenities on top of the rate.

The Short List

Luxury All-Inclusive Resorts That Hold an Inspected Rating

Every resort below holds an AAA Five Diamond, a Forbes Travel Guide star rating, or both, on the 2026 lists. That is the entry ticket. The order and the notes are mine.

Mexico

Grand Velas Riviera Maya, Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen · All ages

Grand Velas Riviera Maya

AAA Five Diamond since 2010 · Forbes Four-Star · Michelin star at Cocina de Autor

Three ambiances in one resort, from jungle-set family suites to an adults-only oceanfront side, and the only all-inclusive anywhere whose restaurant holds a Michelin star and an AAA Five Diamond at once. When the trip has to be perfect, this is where I point people.

Le Blanc Spa Resort Cancun

Cancún · Adults-only

Le Blanc Spa Resort Cancún

AAA Five Diamond since 2010 · Forbes Four-Star

The adults-only original on the Hotel Zone beach: butler service, a spa that anchors the whole week, and six restaurants that trade variety for quality. Expensive even by luxury all-inclusive standards, and its regulars do not care.

Infinity pool at Impression Moxché by Secrets

Playa del Carmen · Adults-only

Impression Moxché by Secrets

AAA Five Diamond since 2023

198 suites on the north end of Secrets Moxché, every one with butler service, plus three exclusive restaurants including Teodoro, a private rooftop pool and a beach club, with full run of the Secrets side too. I stayed in August 2023; it is the best example of "a different resort" I can show you.

Impression Isla Mujeres by Secrets

Isla Mujeres · Adults-only

Impression Isla Mujeres by Secrets

AAA Five Diamond since 2025

The Impression tier on its own island across the bay from Cancún: butler service, oceanfront infinity pools, overwater hammocks, and a four-story water slide nobody expects at a resort this polished. The newest Five Diamond in the region.

Sunset at Hotel Xcaret México

Playa del Carmen · All ages

Hotel Xcaret México

AAA Five Diamond since 2019 · Forbes Four-Star · Michelin star at HA'

The rate includes the Xcaret parks, which no other resort can offer, and HA' holds a Michelin star and an AAA Five Diamond as a restaurant. The one resort on this list where a family with kids gets the full luxury tier and the best week of activities on the coast.

La Casa de la Playa by Xcaret, Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen · Adults-only

La Casa de la Playa by Xcaret

AAA Five Diamond since 2023

Xcaret's 63-suite boutique next to the big hotel: intimate multi-course dining, the parks still included, and the quiet the flagship cannot offer. The adults-only way into the Xcaret world.

UNICO 20°87° Riviera Maya

Akumal, Riviera Maya · Adults-only

UNICO 20°N 87°W

AAA Five Diamond since 2019

The upscale side of the Hard Rock family, adults-only on the Akumal stretch, with a Five Diamond it has held every year since 2019. Ask about the local-host program; it is the closest thing to a butler on this list without the word.

Main pool at Secrets Maroma Beach Riviera Cancún

Riviera Maya · Adults-only

Secrets Maroma Beach

AAA Five Diamond since 2013

The longest-running Five Diamond in the Secrets family, on the stretch of sand I rank as the best beach of any Secrets resort. Preferred Club here is the upgrade worth taking; my five-resort Secrets comparison explains why.

Jungle pool at Secrets Playa Blanca Costa Mujeres

Costa Mujeres · Adults-only

Secrets Playa Blanca

AAA Five Diamond since 2025

Opened February 2025 and Five Diamond in its first year: 505 suites, two oceanfront infinity pools, a jungle pool open to every guest, and a 29,000-square-foot spa. I run its fan community, so I know it week to week.

Infinity pool at Secrets Akumal Riviera Maya

Akumal, Riviera Maya · Adults-only

Secrets Akumal

AAA Five Diamond since 2022

The quiet Secrets, on Akumal's turtle bay, with an 18,000-square-foot spa and a Five Diamond since 2022. Secrets Moxché in Playa del Carmen and Secrets Cap Cana in the Dominican Republic hold the same rating; the comparison guide sorts them.

Grand Velas Los Cabos, the Corridor

Los Cabos · All ages

Grand Velas Los Cabos

AAA Five Diamond since 2017 · Forbes Five-Star

The only Forbes Five-Star all-inclusive in Mexico or the Caribbean, with three tiers of infinity pools stepping toward the sea. Honest note it earns by saying itself: the beach out front is not for swimming, and Chileno's calm cove sits a mile away.

Le Blanc Spa Resort Los Cabos

Los Cabos · Adults-only

Le Blanc Spa Resort Los Cabos

AAA Five Diamond since 2022

Butler service, seven restaurants, and the polish that made the Cancún original famous, transplanted to the Corridor. The special-occasion pick when the spa is half the point.

Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit, Nuevo Vallarta

Nuevo Vallarta · All ages

Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit

AAA Five Diamond every year since 2007 · Forbes Four-Star

The only all-inclusive on Mexico's Pacific coast holding the Five Diamond, and it has held it every year since 2007, with its suites freshly renovated. When someone says "the best all-inclusive on the bay," this is usually the answer.

Hotel Mousai Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta · Adults-only

Hotel Mousai Puerto Vallarta

AAA Five Diamond since 2015

The adults-only tower above Garza Blanca on the bay's south side, Five Diamond since 2015. Its Cancún sibling opened in May 2024; I toured it before the doors opened, and the rooftop-and-terrace formula is the same.

Beach at Atelier Playa Mujeres

Playa Mujeres · Adults-only

Atelier Playa Mujeres

Forbes Four-Star

The art-hotel take on adults-only luxury north of Cancún, and one of the few all-inclusives in the region Forbes rates at all. Its María Dolores tasting room is the hardest table to book on this coast.

The Caribbean

Secrets Cap Cana on Juanillo Beach from the air

Cap Cana, Punta Cana · Adults-only

Secrets Cap Cana

AAA Five Diamond since 2022

The Dominican Republic's only Five Diamond all-inclusive, inside Cap Cana's gates on Juanillo Beach, the calmest swimmable water on the coast, ten minutes from the airport.

Jumby Bay Island, Antigua

Antigua · All ages

Jumby Bay Island

AAA Five Diamond since 2024 · Forbes Four-Star

A private island off Antigua, reached by launch, run all-inclusive at a level almost nothing else in the Caribbean matches. The answer when the brief is "no cars, no crowds, and do not make us think about a bill."

Spice Island Beach Resort on Grand Anse, Grenada

Grenada · All ages

Spice Island Beach Resort

AAA Five Diamond since 2016

A small all-inclusive on Grand Anse, one of the Caribbean's great beaches, holding a Five Diamond since 2016. Grenada is the quiet island most of my clients have not tried yet; this is the reason to.

Cayo Levantado Resort in Samana Bay

Samaná, Dominican Republic · All ages

Cayo Levantado Resort

Forbes Four-Star

An island resort in Samaná Bay, all-inclusive and Forbes Four-Star, on the humpback-whale side of the Dominican Republic. The pairing I like with a Miches week for travelers who want the country without the Punta Cana strip.

TRS Turquesa Hotel, Punta Cana

Punta Cana · Adults-only

TRS Turquesa Hotel

Forbes Recommended

Palladium's adults-only tier on the Bávaro strip, with butler service and run of the whole Grand Palladium complex behind it. The Forbes nod puts it a notch above the strip's other adults-only names.

When the Best Room Is Not All-Inclusive

The Luxury Resorts I Book That Skip the Model

Not every luxury trip should be all-inclusive. In Aruba and Costa Rica most of what I plan is luxury and boutique resorts and villas, and on the Riviera Maya I book the luxury properties at Mayakoba and Maroma alongside the Secrets and the Grand Velas. If the right week is dinner in a different restaurant every night, I plan it that way. Every AAA note below is from the 2026 Five Diamond list.

  • Rosewood Mayakoba Playa del Carmen. AAA Five Diamond since 2009, on the lagoons of the Mayakoba estate.
  • Banyan Tree Mayakoba Playa del Carmen. AAA Five Diamond since 2018; private pool villas in the same estate.
  • Fairmont Mayakoba Playa del Carmen. AAA Five Diamond since 2007, the family-friendly side of Mayakoba.
  • Andaz Mayakoba Playa del Carmen. The design-forward pick on the estate, with an all-inclusive option when you want it.
  • Maroma, A Belmond Hotel Riviera Maya. The Maroma stretch's boutique original, rebuilt and reopened.
  • NIZUC Resort & Spa Cancún. AAA Five Diamond since 2018, on Punta Nizuc at the quiet south end of the island.
  • Waldorf Astoria Cancún Cancún. AAA Five Diamond since 2023, south of the Hotel Zone on its own beach.
  • St. Regis Kanai Riviera Maya. AAA Five Diamond since 2024, built over the mangroves north of Playa del Carmen.
  • Etéreo, Auberge Resorts Collection Riviera Maya. AAA Five Diamond since 2024, the small Auberge property at Kanai.
  • Viceroy Riviera Maya Playa Xcalacoco. Forty-one private villas in the jungle, each with its own plunge pool.
  • The Ritz-Carlton, Aruba Palm Beach. The island's luxury flagship: 320 rooms, a serious spa, a casino and club-level service.
  • Four Seasons Resort Costa Rica Peninsula Papagayo. The country's luxury flagship, with two beaches and an Arnold Palmer golf course.
  • Andaz Peninsula Papagayo Costa Rica. The design pick on the calm side of the same peninsula, with villas with private plunge pools.
  • Nayara Springs and Tabacón Arenal, Costa Rica. The hot-springs half of the split stay I plan most for couples: adults-only villas at Nayara, a thermal river at Tabacón.

The destination pages carry the full lists: Playa del Carmen and Mayakoba, Aruba, and Los Cabos.

The beachfront hammocks at Impression Moxché, August 2023.
Private pool at a villa at JOIA Paraíso by Iberostar, formerly Iberostar Grand Paraíso
The private pool at one of the villas at JOIA Paraíso by Iberostar, where I have stayed several times.
Beach at Secrets Maroma Beach Riviera Cancún
The beach at Secrets Maroma Beach, the best sand in the Secrets family.
Michael organized an unforgettable surprise 40th birthday trip and somehow made coordinating travel for 17 guests feel effortless. He secured an incredible group rate, coordinated directly with the resort managers and our butler, and pre-arranged spa, dining, and arrival logistics. The staff was completely prepared for us when we arrived.

Straight Answer

Preferred Club Is an Upgrade. Impression Is a Different Resort.

The question I get most in the fan groups, answered in nine words.

Preferred Club, Excellence Club and their cousins buy you a better suite, a private pool and lounge, and upgraded dining access inside the same resort. That is often the smartest money on this page. Impression, Le Blanc, Grand Velas and the Xcaret boutiques are built differently from the ground up: butler service on every suite, an entry category that is already a suite, and dining that would survive outside the gates. If you are deciding between a club-tier suite at a premium resort and an entry suite at a luxury one, send me both and I will tell you which week is actually better for the money.

Common Questions

Questions Travelers Ask Before Booking the Luxury Tier With Me

What makes an all-inclusive resort actually luxury?

An inspected rating, not a self-awarded one: AAA Five Diamond, which AAA's inspectors award to roughly three in every thousand properties they rate after unannounced annual visits, or a Forbes Travel Guide star rating, graded by anonymous inspectors against up to 900 standards over at least two nights. Beyond the plaque: butler service on every suite, an entry category that is already a suite, and dining that would survive outside the gates. Mexico's own star system is a self-evaluation, so "five-star" on a resort's website tells you what the resort thinks of itself.

Which all-inclusive resorts have AAA Five Diamond or Forbes ratings?

On the 2026 lists: Grand Velas Riviera Maya, Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit, Grand Velas Los Cabos, Le Blanc Cancún and Le Blanc Los Cabos, Hotel Xcaret México, La Casa de la Playa, Impression Moxché and Impression Isla Mujeres, UNICO 20°N 87°W, Hotel Mousai Puerto Vallarta, Secrets Maroma Beach, Secrets Playa Blanca, Secrets Akumal, Secrets Moxché and Secrets Cap Cana hold AAA Five Diamond. Grand Velas Los Cabos is Forbes Five-Star; Grand Velas Riviera Maya and Riviera Nayarit, Le Blanc Cancún, Hotel Xcaret México, Atelier Playa Mujeres, Casa Velas, Jumby Bay and Cayo Levantado are Forbes Four-Star. Live Aqua Cancún, TRS Turquesa, Paradisus La Perla and Grand Fiesta Americana Coral Beach are Forbes Recommended.

Is Secrets a luxury resort?

The top of the brand is. Secrets Maroma Beach, Secrets Playa Blanca, Secrets Akumal, Secrets Moxché and Secrets Cap Cana hold AAA Five Diamond; Secrets Playa Mujeres holds Four Diamond. Within any Secrets, Preferred Club is an upgrade: better suites, a private pool and lounge. Impression by Secrets, at Moxché and on Isla Mujeres, is a different resort: butler service on every suite, exclusive restaurants, a private rooftop pool. My five-resort Secrets comparison guide sorts them by beach, pools, dining and suites.

What does butler service actually do at a luxury all-inclusive?

At the resorts where it is real, the butler is your point of contact for the week: dinner reservations, spa bookings, a stocked minibar the way you want it, pool loungers held, a private dinner set on the beach, and problems fixed before you notice them. At the resorts where it is a welcome note and a pillow menu, you will know by the second day. I tell you which is which before you pay for it.

Is Grand Velas worth the price?

For the trip that has to be perfect, yes. Grand Velas Riviera Maya holds an AAA Five Diamond since 2010, a Forbes Four-Star rating, and a Michelin star at Cocina de Autor, and it is the only all-inclusive anywhere with that combination. Grand Velas Los Cabos is the only Forbes Five-Star all-inclusive in Mexico or the Caribbean. The honest trade: at Los Cabos the beach is for looking, and at Riviera Maya the resort is large enough that the ambiance you book matters. I will match you to the right one.

Which luxury all-inclusive resorts take children?

Grand Velas Riviera Maya (the Ambassador and Zen Grand sides), Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit and Grand Velas Los Cabos, Hotel Xcaret México, Jumby Bay, Spice Island Beach Resort and Cayo Levantado all take families and keep the luxury tier intact. Hyatt Ziva Cap Cana shares its campus with adults-only Hyatt Zilara, so a family gets crossover dining at the grown-up side. For families the luxury question usually comes down to Grand Velas or Hotel Xcaret, and the parks decide it.

Which luxury all-inclusive resorts are adults-only?

Le Blanc Cancún and Le Blanc Los Cabos, Impression Moxché and Impression Isla Mujeres, La Casa de la Playa, UNICO 20°N 87°W, Hotel Mousai, Atelier Playa Mujeres, Casa Velas, every Secrets, JOIA Paraíso and JOIA Bávaro, TRS Turquesa, and the adults-only Grand Class side of Grand Velas Riviera Maya. The adults-only page sorts them by personality: quiet, social, or butler tier.

Does a luxury all-inclusive include everything?

Almost. Room, dining, drinks, most activities and the spa's hydrotherapy circuit are usually in the rate, and at Hotel Xcaret the parks are too. Some chef's-table experiences carry a charge; Teodoro at Impression Moxché did when I stayed, and the resort tells you upfront. Spa treatments, premium wines, and private dinners on the beach are extra almost everywhere. I list what your rate covers before you book so nothing on the final bill is a surprise.

What is Hyatt Privé and does it help me?

Hyatt Privé is Hyatt's invitation-only program for travel advisors. Booking through a Privé member agency adds amenities on top of the standard rate at participating hotels, and the program extends to Hyatt's all-inclusive brands: Secrets, Impression, Zoëtry, Dreams, Hyatt Ziva and Hyatt Zilara, where the benefit set is adapted for all-inclusive stays. There is no fee for it. I confirm which extras apply to your resort and dates before you book.

Do you book luxury resorts that are not all-inclusive?

Yes. In Aruba and Costa Rica most of what I plan is luxury and boutique resorts and villas, and on the Riviera Maya I book the Mayakoba estate, Maroma, NIZUC, the Waldorf Astoria and the St. Regis alongside the all-inclusives. If the right trip is a beach week at an all-inclusive and a jungle week at Tabacón Thermal Resort, I plan both halves and the drive between them.

How far in advance should I book a luxury all-inclusive?

The top suite categories are the smallest inventories on the property, and the holiday weeks and February sell out of them first. For a specific suite over Christmas, Presidents' Week or a milestone date, the earlier the better. Off-peak, the same suites can be booked closer in, and that is when the luxury tier is most reasonably priced.

Why book a luxury all-inclusive through a travel agent?

It costs nothing extra compared to booking online, because the resorts pay me. What you get on top: a short list built from inspected ratings and 115+ stays of my own, an honest read on the beach, the butler program and the suite categories, private roundtrip airport transfers included, Hyatt Privé extras where they apply, and one person to text when something needs sorting during the trip. I plan for travelers nationwide.

Tell Me the Occasion and the Budget

That is all I need to come back with two or three resorts that fit, and an honest word on which tier your budget actually buys. Private roundtrip airport transfers are included on every all-inclusive booking, and I will tell you straight when a resort is coasting on its own stars. If you have these five things, even roughly, the first reply is a real shortlist:

  • The occasion
  • The month, or the dates if you have them
  • Adults-only or family
  • A budget per couple, even a loose one
  • Must-haves: butler, swim beach, spa, dining
