Do travel agents get better rates? Yes, or at worst the same price. For an all-inclusive resort, booking through a travel agent never costs more than the resort’s own website, because the resort pays the agent’s commission and you pay the agent nothing. With almost every brand I book, my rate comes in lower.
The bigger difference is what you get for that price. Book through me and you get private roundtrip airport transfers, perks like Hyatt Privé extras where the resort takes part, and someone who re-checks your booking during the big sales and rebooks you when the price drops. Most of all, you get someone on your side. If a flight changes, the room isn’t what you booked, or a storm hits days before you leave, you call me, and I deal with the resort and the airline while you stay on vacation. For real emergencies, my local staff in Cancún can be there in person.
The one time to book direct is paying with hotel points.
I’m Michael Boguslavskiy of Caballeros Vacations, an independent all-inclusive travel agent since 2011, and I’ve stayed at most of the resorts I sell. I’m a Hyatt Privé member agency for Secrets, Dreams, Hyatt Ziva and Hyatt Zilara, one of Iberostar’s Top Star Agents, and I run Facebook travel communities with more than 300,000 combined members. Every example below comes from my own quotes and bookings.
Table of Contents
Quick Reference: Travel Agent vs Booking Direct
- Price vs the resort’s website: Never higher through me, and almost every brand I book gives me rates below it, including prepaid and most flash-sale rates.
- Who pays the agent: The resort pays my commission. I charge no planning fee.
- The points exception: Redeeming hotel points is the one reason to book direct.
- Hyatt Privé earning: Paid Privé bookings through me still earn World of Hyatt points and elite nights, plus Privé extras at participating resorts.
- Deposits: Often none on Hyatt bookings, $50 per person on other resort-only bookings, and $200 per person on flight packages.
- Price drops: I re-check bookings during major holiday and brand sales and rebook when I can.
- Transfers: Private roundtrip airport transfers are included on every all-inclusive booking through me.
Paying cash? Compare my quote with the resort’s price for the same room and dates.
Do Travel Agents Get Better Rates? The Short Answer
Yes. Booking through Caballeros Vacations never costs more than the resort’s own website, and with almost every all-inclusive brand I book, it costs less. The worst case is a match. I can usually book the resort’s exact prepaid and non-refundable rates too, plus most flash sales.
Here are three real quotes from my own bookings, each against the resort’s own price for the same room and dates:
| Trip | Resort's own price | Through Caballeros Vacations | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Iberostar Selection Paraíso Lindo, Dec 19 to 25, 2026, family reunion, 18 rooms (priced Oct 2025) | $55,623 on Iberostar's website (member discount, flexible rate) | $52,811.95, with flexible cancellation, a $50 per person deposit and airport transfers | $2,811 less, about 5% |
| SLS Playa Mujeres, Captivate Swim-Out Family Style Two-Bedroom, Mar 19 to 26, 2027 (priced Oct 5, 2026) | $10,641 on SLS's website | $8,727.34 | $1,913.66 less |
| SLS Playa Mujeres, Elite Ocean View Rooftop King, refundable rate (priced Jan 15, 2026) | $2,877 on SLS's website, transfers not included | $2,772, private roundtrip transfers included | $105 less, plus transfers worth $120 to $150 |
The reunion is the one I’d point to. The organizer priced the same rooms five ways in her own spreadsheet: Iberostar’s website at the flexible rate ($55,623), Iberostar’s group sales desk ($54,564), Iberostar’s non-refundable website rate ($53,020), Iberostar’s call center ($52,841.85), and me ($52,811.95). Mine was the lowest of the five, and it came with flexible cancellation, a $50 per person deposit, partial payments any time, airport transfers and help setting up group dinners. The call center, the closest on price, offered no airport transfers and no way to book dinners ahead.
On the SLS two-bedroom, another family in the same group booked the same room a week earlier at $7,799.63, on an agent-only promo code that ran through the end of September 2026.
Rates move with dates and promotions, so I can’t promise “lower” every week. What I can promise is that booking through me never costs more than booking direct. Sometimes the better deal is the same price with more included, like Hyatt Privé extras.
- Book direct if: you’re paying with hotel points. That’s the one real exception.
- Book through me if: you’re paying cash and want the same rate or a better one, with private transfers included.
This answer is about all-inclusive resorts, resort-only or packaged with flights. Flights on their own work differently. Cruises and Universal tickets come with their own perks through me, listed further down.
How Travel Agent Pricing Works When You Book an All-Inclusive
Who pays the travel agent?
The resort does. When you book an all-inclusive through me, the resort pays my commission directly, and your price stays the same as booking direct or lower. I charge no planning fee.
NerdWallet’s explainer on how travel agents get paid describes the same model: most advisors earn commission from the companies you book instead of charging upfront fees. It also flags the fair worry that commission could steer an agent. My answer is the promise on my homepage: “If something isn’t right for your trip, I’ll tell you, even when it costs me the booking.”
Resorts also tend to keep their public rate the same on every channel, which hotels call rate parity. So when people ask me how travel agents get better rates under parity, the answer is agent-only rates, member rates, package pricing and group rates for weddings and reunions. Those often come in below the public rate for the same rooms.
Prepaid, non-refundable and flash-sale rates
If the resort’s site shows a prepaid rate, I likely have access to the same one, and the same goes for non-refundable rates. Most flash sales and brand promotions reach me too, and the current ones are on my all-inclusive deals board. Spotted a sale? Send me the link before you book.
Vacation packages with flights: lower deposits, different rules
A flight package lets you start with a $200 per person deposit instead of paying for flights in full. It can lower the total too: the room price inside a package isn’t shown on its own, so a resort can discount it without changing its public rate.
On one quote for two adults at an adults-only resort in Costa Mujeres, the deposit was $100 resort-only and $400 with flights ($200 per person). Packaging saved about $150 against buying the same nonstop flights from the airline. The trade-off was that those flights carried the package company’s cancellation fee, while resort-only had no penalty before a set date. Private transfers were included either way, and your airline loyalty number goes on the package so the flights still earn points.
Hyatt bookings with no deposit
Hyatt takes no deposit on a lot of its bookings, and through Hyatt Privé I can do the same. On a recent two-room Hyatt booking, all I needed was a card to put on file with Hyatt, and the actual payment happened at check-in. The card only covers a late cancellation or no-show, and the reservations show up in the travelers’ own Hyatt accounts.
Want to keep your cash until the trip? Start with Hyatt’s all-inclusives.
When Booking Direct Is Better: Paying With Points
When is booking direct actually the better choice? My answer: “Using points. That’s honestly it.”
Redeeming points is the only reason to book with the hotel. I book directly with Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt and plenty of other suppliers, but I can’t redeem points for you, so a stay paid with points goes through the hotel’s own loyalty program. Hyatt runs a separate points chart for its all-inclusives (Hyatt Ziva, Hyatt Zilara, Secrets and Dreams). If you’re sitting on a healthy World of Hyatt balance, it’s worth pricing out a points stay and booking it direct.
Earning points is different. A paid Hyatt Privé booking through me still earns World of Hyatt points and counts toward your elite status. You just can’t spend points through me.
That’s why a lot of my clients in a Hyatt-brand vacation club still book with me. Privé sometimes runs better rates or perks, or they’d rather earn points than spend them.
- Book direct if: you’re redeeming points.
- Book through me if: you’re paying cash and want points, elite nights and Privé extras on one booking.
What a Hyatt Privé Agency Is, and What You Get
Hyatt Privé is Hyatt’s invitation-only program for travel advisors, and Privé bookings can only be made through an advisor in it. I’m a Privé member agency for Secrets, Dreams, Hyatt Ziva and Hyatt Zilara. Privé stays earn the usual points and elite nights, and participating resorts add extras that vary hotel by hotel. At Hyatt’s all-inclusives, those typically include a resort credit, early check-in and late check-out when available, and hydrotherapy access, usually with a three or four night minimum stay.
For example, Hyatt Privé perks at Secrets Playa Blanca in Costa Mujeres include:
- $100 resort credit to use during your stay.
- One hydrotherapy session per person.
Here is the big one: those perks apply whether you book a Preferred Club room or a standard room. You don’t have to pay for the Preferred Club upgrade to get them. Booked direct, neither room comes with them. On top of the perks, every all-inclusive booking through me includes private roundtrip airport transfers, and the stay still earns World of Hyatt points and elite nights.
Which rates get them: Privé extras usually come with World of Hyatt member rates too, as long as a Privé advisor makes the booking. Sometimes Hyatt runs Privé-only rates that come in lower than anything public. And sometimes I can get a rate below any Hyatt member rate that doesn’t carry the Privé extras. When that happens, I show you both and you pick.
Do Travel Agents Get Better Rates Than Costco or Booking Sites?
Costco sells vacation packages, hotel stays, cruises and rental cars. It also sells toilet paper, mouthwash, toothpaste, car tires, gas, Christmas decorations and bedding. You see where I’m going with this. Travel is one aisle in a warehouse, and it’s sold the same way as everything else there: a set package at a set price, often with a Digital Costco Shop Card thrown in, and a phone team working set hours, Pacific time, if something goes wrong.
Costco and I run two different businesses. Costco’s is built around the membership and a shop card you spend at the warehouse or on Costco.com. Mine is built around knowing the resorts firsthand and being reachable when you need me.
I’ve stayed at most of the resorts I sell, private roundtrip transfers come with every all-inclusive booking, Privé extras apply on Hyatt bookings where the resort takes part, and my local staff in Cancún are there when something goes wrong. I shop at Costco myself. Sometimes a Costco package comes in under my price, occasionally even under a Hyatt Privé rate, and when it does, I’ll say so.
Big booking sites are a separate case. Stays booked through them typically don’t earn hotel points or status, and a mid-trip problem usually means a call center.
Whether the other quote comes from Costco, a booking site or a resort’s own package, line these up first:
- Same resort, room and nights: The same room category on the same dates.
- Flights: The same departure airport, airline and flight times.
- Cabin: I quote Main Cabin on purpose. Basic Economy is how a lot of package sites get the number down, but it’s restrictive if anything changes.
- Transfers: Private, shared or none. Costco’s inclusions vary package by package. Mine are private, roundtrip and included.
- Cancellation terms: Packaged flights can carry the package company’s fee, while resort-only bookings may have no penalty until a set date.
- Rewards and extras: A shop card and Executive reward on one side. World of Hyatt points, elite nights, resort credits and Privé extras on the other.
What Happens If the Price Drops After You Book?
If the rate drops after you book, I re-check it and rebook it when I can. During the major holiday promotional sales and individual brand sales, I run through my bookings looking for savings I can lock in. When one lands, I rebook it and send you an email showing exactly how much you saved.
It won’t happen on every booking every day, since checking constantly would be impossible. Drops between quote and booking get passed along too: on a recent two-room booking, the price dipped slightly before I booked it, and the clients got the lower rate without having to ask.
Book when the price works for you, and watch my current all-inclusive deals while you’re still choosing.
What a Travel Agent Adds That Booking Direct Doesn't
The same all-inclusive, booked two ways:
| What you get | Booking direct with the resort | Booking through me |
|---|---|---|
| Room rate | Resort's public rate | Never higher; lower rates with almost every brand I book |
| Prepaid and flash-sale rates | Yes | Usually the same access |
| Earn hotel points and elite credit | Yes | Yes, on Hyatt Privé bookings |
| Pay with points | Yes | No, book points stays direct |
| Partner perks (Hyatt Privé extras, Universal Early Park Entry, cruise extras) | No | Yes, where the resort, park or sailing takes part |
| Deposit | Resort's policy (Hyatt often none) | None on many Hyatt bookings (card on file); $50 per person on other resort-only bookings; $200 per person on flight packages |
| Private roundtrip airport transfers | Arranged separately | Included on every all-inclusive booking |
| Price-drop re-check | Up to you | Re-checked during major holiday and brand sales |
| Help during the trip | Resort front desk or call center | Me directly, plus local staff in Cancún |
Someone in your corner when a trip goes sideways
A big part of what I do is being there when things go a little sideways. You don’t spend your vacation chasing resort management or sitting on hold with an airline, sometimes for hours. You tell me, and I make those calls.
I contact the resort and advocate for you with years of connections, phone numbers and email addresses behind me. And I can be annoying when the situation calls for it.
One client was three days from a Punta Cana trip when a storm hit. I had them in a different resort, with two extra days added, before they finished packing. For serious emergencies, my local staff in Cancún can be there in person.
Picking the right resort from actually being there
I’ve stayed at most of the resorts I sell, so I match you to a resort based on what I saw in person, not on Photoshopped brochure images. That includes the awkward calls, like flagging construction at a client’s first-pick resort while they were still choosing. My side-by-side comparison of five Secrets resorts shows how I match travelers.
Partner perks you don't get booking direct
The partner programs I’m in add perks you can’t get booking direct, at no extra cost:
- Hyatt Privé (Secrets, Dreams, Hyatt Ziva, Hyatt Zilara): extras like a resort credit and hydrotherapy where the resort takes part, on standard and Preferred Club rooms alike. Hyatt resorts also generally try to honor room and building requests on my Privé bookings, though nothing is guaranteed.
- Iberostar: I’m one of Iberostar’s Top Star Agents, the brand’s award for its top-producing North American agents by booking volume. Here’s what that standing gets you on an Iberostar trip.
- Universal Orlando Resort: I’m a Universal Preferred travel agency, so every Universal Orlando ticket bought through me comes with Early Park Entry.
- Cruises: through Travel Leaders Network, many of the sailings I book qualify for extras like bonus onboard credit, private dinner events, hosted receptions, specialty dining or prepaid gratuities, depending on the cruise line, the ship and the date. On Distinctive Voyages departures, a private cocktail reception, bonus onboard credit and exclusive events are built in. More on my cruise page.
With other brands where I hold status, perks like room upgrades, resort credits, early check-in and late check-out come through when they’re available.
Paying with points? Book direct. Otherwise, all of this comes at the same price as booking direct or less.
Do You Need a Travel Agent for an All-Inclusive?
Yes, even if you already know exactly which resort you want. A lot of my clients start with “I want Secrets Playa Blanca, get me a good rate,” and that’s a great place to start. Knowing the resort doesn’t change what I add: a rate that’s never higher than the resort’s own website and lower with almost every brand I book, private roundtrip airport transfers, partner perks, and a re-check of your booking during the big sales.
And booking the room is the easy part. The real question is what happens when something goes wrong on day two.
Somebody has to make the calls when a flight changes or the room is wrong, and through me, that’s me. I call the resort and advocate for you while you stay on vacation, with local staff in Cancún for real emergencies. Even if you know everything about where you’re going, it costs you nothing to have an extra person in your corner.
- Book direct if: you’re paying with hotel points, or you’re booking a flight on its own (book flight-only trips with the airline directly).
- Book through me if: you’re paying cash, whether you already know the resort you want or you’re still choosing between an adults-only all-inclusive and a family all-inclusive. You get the same rate or lower, private transfers, partner perks and one person to call when something goes wrong.
Common Mistakes When Comparing an Agent's Quote to Booking Direct
- Mixing cabins: A Basic Economy package and a Main Cabin quote aren’t the same trip. Compare Main Cabin to Main Cabin.
- Mismatched departure cities: A quote from another airport is a different trip. Match the flights first.
- Skipping the cancellation terms: Packaged flights can carry the package company’s cancellation fee, while a resort-only booking can have no penalty before a set date. The cheaper number can be the stricter one.
- Forgetting the transfer: Transfers through me are private, roundtrip and included. Elsewhere, they can be shared, extra or missing, so price yours in.
- Expecting points from a booking site: Stays booked through online booking sites typically don’t earn hotel points or status. Hyatt Privé bookings through me do.
- Trying to pay with points through an agent: It can’t be done. Book points stays directly with the hotel.
Match all of these, then book the quote that wins.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does it cost more to use a travel agent for an all-inclusive?
No. Booking an all-inclusive through me costs the same as booking direct with the resort or less, because the resort pays my commission. I don’t charge a planning fee.
Planning, resort matching, support while you travel and private roundtrip airport transfers are all included. Some agents do charge planning fees, so ask before you book.
How do travel agents get paid if it doesn't cost me more?
The resort pays them, so you don’t. Resorts generally keep their public rate the same whichever way you book, and the American Society of Travel Advisors notes most hotel brands pay agent commission only on the base room rate. Hyatt pays the commission on Privé bookings too, and I don’t charge a planning fee on any booking.
Does commission steer the advice? My rule: if a resort isn’t right for your trip, I’ll tell you, even when it costs me the booking.
Do travel agents get better rates than booking online?
Against the resort’s own website, yes, or at worst a match. I can always match the public rate, and almost every brand I book gives me agent-only rates below it. I also get the same prepaid and non-refundable rates and most flash sales.
Package sites are a different comparison. I won’t always be the cheapest number online, and some package prices get lower with Basic Economy flights or shared transfers. Send me the resort’s price with the room category, dates and rate type, and I’ll price it side by side.
Is it cheaper to book an all-inclusive through a travel agent?
Against booking direct, it’s never more expensive, and with almost every brand I book it’s cheaper. The table near the top of this page shows three real examples. Packaging flights can lower the total further: on one Costa Mujeres quote, packaged flights came in about $150 below the same nonstop flights bought from the airline. Packaged flights can carry the package company’s cancellation fee, so ask for the quote with flights and without.
Group rates often come in below the public rate too; see my group travel page. Against warehouse clubs and package sites, it depends on the exact package, so compare those one at a time.
What is the benefit of booking through a travel agent vs a travel site?
A person who knows the resort and keeps working for you after you pay. Hotel stays booked through online travel sites typically don’t earn hotel points or elite credit, while my Hyatt Privé bookings earn World of Hyatt points and elite nights.
Through me you also get the same rate or lower and Privé extras where the resort takes part. I re-check bookings during the big holiday and brand sales, and if something goes wrong, you reach me directly.
Do I still earn Hyatt points if I book through a travel agent?
Yes, when it’s a Hyatt Privé booking. My Privé bookings earn the usual World of Hyatt points, the nights count toward elite status, and the reservation shows up in your own Hyatt account. My Privé quotes say it right under “Includes”: “Rate Earns Hyatt Nights/Points.”
Can I use my points if I book through a travel agent?
No. Paying with points is the one case where I tell people to book direct. Points stays go through the hotel’s own loyalty program, and agents can’t book them.
Hyatt prices its all-inclusives, including Hyatt Ziva, Hyatt Zilara, Secrets and Dreams, on a separate points chart, so check it if you have a balance. Paid Privé stays through me still earn points, and airline miles still earn on flights I package.
What is a Hyatt Privé travel agent?
A travel advisor in Hyatt’s invitation-only Privé program. Privé bookings can only be made through an advisor in the program, they earn World of Hyatt points and elite nights, and participating hotels add extras that vary by property, such as a resort credit, hydrotherapy, and early check-in or late check-out at the all-inclusives that take part. I’m a Privé member agency for Secrets, Dreams, Hyatt Ziva and Hyatt Zilara.
How much is the deposit when I book through a travel agent?
It depends on the booking. Many Hyatt bookings take no deposit: your card goes on file with Hyatt and you pay at check-in. Most other resort-only bookings take $50 per person. Flight packages take $200 per person instead of full payment for the flights. I can usually hold a flight-and-hotel quote for 24 hours or a hotel-only quote for up to 72 hours while you decide.
Are airport transfers included when I book through you?
Yes. Private roundtrip airport transfers are included on every all-inclusive booking through me, in every destination I book, including Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Aruba and Costa Rica, resort-only or with flights. There’s nothing extra to arrange on your end.
Flying into Cancún? My Cancún airport guide to customs, immigration and passport control covers what happens between landing and meeting your driver.
What happens if something goes wrong during my trip?
You reach me directly, and I take it from there. I contact the resort, push the right people and handle flight changes, so you aren’t spending your vacation on hold with an airline.
For serious emergencies, my local staff in Cancún can be there in person, backed by years of local connections. If an emergency back home means you need to fly out early, I can have a car get you from the resort to the airport fast.
Final Notes
So, do travel agents get better rates? For an all-inclusive resort, booking through Caballeros Vacations never costs more than the resort’s own website, because the resort pays my commission, and with almost every brand I book it costs less. The one real reason to book direct is paying with points, and paid Hyatt stays booked through me as Privé still earn your points and status.
For everything else, compare the same trip: room, dates, flights, cabin, transfers, cancellation terms and who picks up the phone when something goes wrong. Against Costco or a booking site, match those details before you compare totals. Paying cash? Put my quote next to the resort’s price and book whichever wins once the extras are counted.
Plan Your Next All-Inclusive With Me
Send me what you’re looking at, whether that’s a resort, your dates or the exact package you found on another site, and I’ll tell you straight whether I can beat it. Private roundtrip airport transfers are included on every all-inclusive booking through me. Schedule a travel consultation with me, and I’ll read your details myself, starting with your dates and who’s coming.
